Our Water [2/10/2010]
The month of January saw the opening of a new school year and many changes to the HoH daily program.

January was an exceptionally different month for us because we ran out of water. HoH has their own water supply using wells and rain water catchment systems. But for one entire month, we didn't receive any rain. We usually receive 305 mm (12 inches) average rainfall for the month of January. It was hard to change the mentality of people who are used to TOO much water to have them thinking about preserving water.

You can imagine the difficult task of teaching the moms who were washing all of the cloth nappies (diapers)! The toilets were not smelling too great, either.

The residents and their children all bathed in our creek. We made a makeshift dam that they could use as a tub. But we had to have several meetings to make sure that people washed dirty nappies down river (it caused some interesting fights).

Everyone was praying for rain... and then we received rain. A LOT of rain during a big storm. It caused a lot of flash flooding. It was a good lesson in praying specifically. :0)

(We did buy some new water tanks. We sure could use help to recover that cost and to buy more tanks.)
